Рекламное название штата Миннесота относится ко времени Пан-Американской выставки в Буффало в 1901 г., где выставленные Миннесотой образцы пшеницы и молочной продукции создали представление об этом штате как о «житнице страны». Переработка сельскохозяйственной продукции и сейчас остается ведущей отраслью промышленности штата Миннесота, хотя сельское хозяйство дает всего 7% стоимости продукции штата.
